Gabriela Garrido, a senior who has attended FCS since 5K, was accepted into the Summer Institute at the Florida State University College of Medicine for an intensive week of medical education and experiences this past summer. Gaby, who plans to be a pediatrician, applied for this program and included recommendations from Mrs. Melanie Hopkins, High School Science teacher, and Mrs. Griselda Bain, our former College Counselor.
Gaby described the program as tough, with long days, but filled with fascinating experiences. The very first session was learning to take vital signs. The students attended lectures given by doctors and professors, including a course on medical ethics, and they participated in a CPR certification course.
Gaby said that watching two operations was very interesting. The first surgery she observed was on a prostate and it was done using a robotic camera. The next surgery was a knee replacement. Gaby stated she was a bit shocked at first but was amazed when she saw the bone.
Her overall experience at FSU was a very positive one and she is very excited to continue the path towards becoming a doctor.
May God bless you, Gaby, as you finish high school and begin your collegiate studies!
